Can't Copy a YouTube Transcript? Here's What Works
Selection jumping, copy pasting nothing, or timestamps ruining the text? Why copying from the transcript panel misbehaves, and the sequence that gets clean text every time.
Quick answer: Two things break transcript copying, and both have simple fixes. Selection jumps around because the panel auto-scrolls to follow the video — pause the video first. And the text arrives full of timestamps because the panel includes them by default — turn them off in the panel's own three-dot menu before you select anything.
Do this first: pause the video
While the video plays, the transcript panel scrolls to keep the current line in view. If you are dragging a selection at the same time, the panel moves under your cursor and the selection jumps or collapses. Pausing stops the auto-scroll and makes selection behave normally.
This single step fixes most "I can't select the transcript" complaints.
Then: turn timestamps off before selecting
The transcript panel has its own three-dot menu, separate from the video's. Open it and choose Toggle timestamps. The times disappear and the text reflows into readable paragraphs, so what you copy is clean prose rather than hundreds of lines each prefixed with a time.
Most people never find this menu and end up deleting timestamps by hand afterwards, which on an hour-long video is hundreds of lines. Full method in removing timestamps properly.
The reliable sequence
- Pause the video.
- Open the three-dot menu below the video → Show transcript.
- In the transcript panel's own three-dot menu, toggle timestamps off.
- Click once inside the panel, then select all within it — dragging from the first line to the last works, and on most browsers Ctrl+A / Cmd+A after clicking inside the panel selects the panel's contents.
- Copy.
If the paste comes out empty or mangled
- Only part of it pasted. The panel renders long transcripts in sections. Scroll to the bottom first so the whole thing exists, then select. See transcripts showing only part of the video.
- Formatting came along with it. Paste as plain text — Ctrl+Shift+V or Cmd+Shift+V — or paste into a plain text editor first.
- Nothing pasted at all. An extension may be interfering with clipboard access. Test in an incognito window with extensions disabled.
- The selection keeps collapsing. The video is still playing, or you started the drag outside the panel.
On mobile
Copying the full transcript from the YouTube app is awkward and there is no timestamp toggle. Open the video in a desktop browser if you need the text in bulk. For a single quote, long-press within the transcript view and drag the handles.
If you are copying it to paste into an AI tool
That whole workflow — find transcript, strip timestamps, select, copy, paste, prompt — takes four to six minutes per video once you include the fiddling. Fine occasionally, tedious as a habit, and the friction is why most people stop doing it. We put numbers on it in why copying transcripts by hand wastes more time than you think.
YT Summarizer collapses it to pasting a URL: it retrieves the transcript, reads all of it, and returns an overview, key points and takeaways in about a minute. A free summary every day — two with a free account — then one-time credit packs from $9 with credits that never expire.
